Our Initiative
ArduFriends focuses on diversifying the engineering field by introducing underrepresented students of color to electrical engineering and computer science (EECS).
We host classroom Arduino workshops where students grades 6-9 get the opportunity to wire circuits and write code.
Our Impact
ArduFriends is an expanding network of students interested in engineering and computer science.
Students form groups and are given an Arduino, electrical components, and a handbook.
By providing as little instruction as possible, students are more confident to explore and eager to learn.
Students are amazed by what they are able to create with their minimal amount of EECS knowledge.
Our Inspiration
As students in the Tech Academy, we're excited by computers and engineering and fascinated by math. As such, its discouraging seeing many students at our school demur from math class and shy away from engineering and programming clubs.
We feel students are deterred from these activities because of a lack of role models and awareness.
We created ArduFriends to combat these phobias by teaching EECS in a welcoming way and foster a network of curious, motivated students.
Future Plans
We hope to expand our initiative to include elementary students at our K-12 school.
We are also working towards creating a website that autonomously checks students’ code and wiring.
